Take it from our experts: unpacking is almost worst than packing. Let these moving tips make it a little easier for you when you settle into your new home.

There’s nothing like the feeling of a fresh start after a big move—but you know what’s almost worse than packing? Unpacking. After all the effort you put in to stow your belongings, you have to do it all again, but in reverse! These moving tips help you unpack fast after moving, so you can settle into your new home.

1. Have an essentials box

This is technically a packing tip, but it will make your life so much easier once you’ve moved. Label an “open-first” box to fill with essentials like your toothbrush, other toiletries and maybe a fresh set of clothing and sheets so that you don’t have to dig around all your boxes for the essentials. This tip really brings the stress level down. You can pack an essentials box or bag for every family member.

2. Clean, clean, clean

Before you go strewing your things around the house, take the time to clean. This is your moment to make your house shine without tons of junk in the way. Pro tip: keep your cleaning supplies packed together and clearly labelled to make this even simpler.

3. A place for everything

Don’t unpack just yet! Before you start unpacking all of your stuff, make sure the boxes are placed in the right room, corresponding to their contents. This seems like a no-brainer, but don’t underestimate the brain fog of big changes.

4. Start with the bathroom

Trust us, if there’s any room you want fully operational ASAP, it’s the bathroom. You’re going to want the restroom equipped with soap, toilet paper and hand towels, so once you’ve done that take a moment to hang the shower curtain and get other toiletries in order. You’ll thank us later.

5. Next comes the bedroom

If you don’t get through all of your unpacking in one day, you’ll need a place to collapse when you’re done for the day. Grab those linens from your essentials bag and make sure your new bed is set up. If unpacking moves into a two-day affair, at least you’ll be well-rested and have a stocked bathroom to start the day with!
