1. Set up utilities
This tip is actually a pre-moving note, but if you’re reading this on a moving day, it isn’t too late. In the fog of a move, it’s easy to forget that utilities need to be set up; otherwise, you may be unpacking by candlelight! You can set your utilities up the weeks before a move or even on the day of. Utilities at your former address will need to be cancelled or transferred. Utilities can include:

3. Locate the water valve and power sources
In an emergency, it’s crucial to know where the fuse box, water, propane, or oil shut-offs are. Locating these sources and knowing how to turn them off can save headaches or even disaster.
4. Check emergency detectors
Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should have fresh batteries and be tested to ensure they work. Small details like this keep your family safe. It doesn’t hurt to check how to silence the smoke detector for the next time Mom burns the lasagna!
