Moving tips and cleaning tips go hand in hand, unfortunately. Get your new place up to your cleanliness standards with these tips!

One thing about moving into a new home—it’s never quite as clean as you want it to be. Whether it’s a new build with lingering hints of dust or construction, or an old home with dirt that seems just as old taking up residence in the corners, a deep clean before moving in your things is one of the best moving tips out there.

Do I have to deep clean my new home?

People have different standards for almost everything, and that includes the cleanliness of their homes. While it may not be a necessity, the blank slate feeling you’ll get from having a sparkling clean home is hard to resist. Besides—when else will your home be completely empty?

How do I clean my new home before moving in?

Make a list! There are more cleaning supplies you’ll need before the movers get there than you’ll realise. Having a list will keep you organized for cleaning day. These are some of the basics, but you’ll have to adapt your list based on materials in your home, i.e., Wood or carpet).

Basic cleaning supplies you’ll need:

  • Rubber gloves

  • Paper towels

  • Microfibre cloths

  • Melamine sponge (a.k.a. Magic Eraser)

  • White vinegar

  • Baking soda

  • Glass cleaner

  • All-purpose cleaner

  • Liquid or powder bleach-based cleaner

  • Toilet brush

  • Broom

  • Mop

  • Trash bags

Beyond the basics

You don’t need us to tell you to clean every room; that’s obvious, but each room has some sneaky spots that you might miss.

Pro tip: clean every room from top to bottom—what goes up must come down, and you don’t want to spread dust bunnies from the ceiling fan all over your clean floor!

Kitchen

  • Don’t skip under the burners

  • Pull out all appliances to get a really deep clean

  • Vacuum drawers

  • Line cabinets with shelf-lining paper

Bathroom

  • Zap any mildew with a bleach-based cleanser

  • Vinegar can help remove spots from glass shower doors

Every room

  • Don’t skip high-touch surfaces like light switches and door knobs

  • Dust ceiling fans and window blinds

  • To avoid window streaks, use a microfibre cloth

Time-saving strategies

Divide and conquer: delegate tasks to members of your family based on skill level or even just enjoyment. If you love vacuuming but hate mopping, divvy up the chores in ways that are a little less unpleasant!

The other, less frugal way to save time: hire a cleaning company. This one-time deep clean expense is worth it if you don’t have the time or capacity to get as deep a clean as you’d prefer.
